Singapore Airlines SilverKris Changi Introduction

My flight to Taipei was scheduled to depart at 3pm, so I checked out of the JW Marriott Singapore South Beach Hotel and grabbed a taxi to the airport. Singapore Changi is one of my favourite airports in the world, and is consistently ranked the best amongst frequent travellers. The business class check-in line for EVA Air was wide open, and after a few short questions about the purpose of my trip, I was off through immigration with my boarding passes and invitation to use the Singapore Airlines SilverKris business class lounge.

Changi Airport is actually survivable without lounge access, with plenty of shops, restaurants and interactive displays for travellers of all ages. While I usually have a lounge invitation, I often spend much of time just going through the terminal and checking out what’s new.

Since I was flying business class on a Star Alliance partner airline, I had access to the Singapore Airlines SilverKris business class lounge. The lounge is located on the third floor of Terminal 3, with all business class passengers on Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance members having access 24/7. My first impression of the space was that it was huge. Like enormous. I’m used to taking a quick tour upon entry to any new lounge, but this one probably took a good 10 minutes to walk through, and I’m still not convinced I saw the entire space. Changi is a busy airport, with many wide-body planes departing regularly, so the lounge never felt quiet, though the ample seating meant it was never difficult to find a quiet space to relax.

I really liked the use of warm leathers and marble, and appreciated how open the space felt. The space was well-designed for high traffic volume, which can’t be said for some other flagship lounges. I particularly liked all of the fresh flowers throughout the seating area.

One of the highlights of the lounge is the food and beverage selection. I ate just before leaving the hotel so I didn’t have much of an appetite, and wanted to save room for the catering on board EVA Air. However, I did manage to grab a few of the hot items on display, including seafood pasta and chicken wings. I can assure you everything tasted much better than it looks (I’m terrible at photographing food).

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any good pictures of the buffet spread, as every time I tried there were plenty of people grabbing food. I generally don’t like taking photos with other people in them, and ultimately wasn’t able to get any clear shots. However, there was a large selection of hot and cold buffet items, along with some snack food.

The self-serve bar area was well stocked and featured a selection of non-alcoholic beverages, coffee/tea, wine, beer, spirits, and champagne. I usually find the liquor selection in business class lounges weak, and was happy to see champagne on offer (even though you had to request it – I guess people were drinking too much, though it still seems like a weird policy).

In addition to the great seating and food/beverage options, there is also a large bathroom with 10 shower cubicles for business class passengers. While I didn’t use them, I can see these being very useful if you spent the day walking around Singapore and had an overnight flight coming up. There is also a quiet area of the lounge with dedicated office space if you need to get some work done before your flight.

Business class lounges are usually more function over substance, in my opinion. While you can often find decent seating, work spaces, and showers, I find the food and beverage options are usually subpar, and don’t often find the decor all that inspiring.

The SilverKris lounge at Changi is the flagship business class lounge for Singapore Airlines and it shows in the details. Rich marble and warm leather create an inviting space to unwind before your flight, and the food and drink selection is top shelf with a variety of spirits, wine, and champagne. In a lot of ways this lounge is on par with other first class lounges, and definitely one of the best business class lounges I’ve experienced.

While I wouldn’t want to spend the entire day here (like I did at The Lufthansa First Class Terminal in Frankfurt), I definitely appreciated having the access to relax after exploring the airport for an hour!
